They checked the A/C system to make sure everything was working, and nothing was leaking and they cleaned the air cleaner that is attached to my furnace, and requires special cleaning. They always do a very thorough job, and they do not try to find other things they could try to charge me for, as is the case with another company I tired a couple of times. Rick, I wanted to thank you for the professional staff who fixed my air conditioner on a Friday night and Saturday morning. I called after I got home from work and realized the a/c was not cooling the house. I expected an answering machine and was surprised when a "real person" answered the phone. Even more amazing was the fact that someone arrived within an hour to assess the problem. Unfortunately I needed a new part and he could not get it until Saturday morning. They went the extra mile by going out of their way to obtain the part from Trane as they were closed. I was up and running before noon!

The system is working perfectly. We have a maximum of 1.5 degrees difference between all the rooms. This is the first time in 16 years that you can move room to room without feeling like you need to adjust the amount of clothing you need in order to maintain your comfort.

I wanted to provide an update and another thanks. Significant reductions in average kWh per day use have been realized earlier in the year, but I waited to contact you until I experienced a month like August 2012. My recent bill for August confirms my suspicions that the new A/C install with zoning, replaced duct work with increased insulation has definitely reduced my electric consumption by up to 40%.

I feel I have a fair comparison with similar consecutive hot days from the previous year. Thanks to all.

Thanks to CPS Energy and San Antonio! I now have an energy efficient house with plans to continue energy saving additions as my budget allows. I am very appreciative of the CPS subsidized Home Energy Audit which got me started. Eco-Synergy Advisors were very thorough and customer friendly in their audit. Chris Flores, Managing Director, also encouraged me to call after the audit should I have questions. Eco-Synergy Advisors found items I had never considered (65% duct leakage). The final audit was informative and easy to understand. All items requiring attention were ranked according to best return on my energy investment from top to bottom. I had thought new windows were high on the list when in reality ductwork, A/C replacement and attic insulation were much higher. Windows were near the bottom of the list.

After the audit, I was very appreciative to receive a call from Joni Zacharisen who was my CPS guardian angel (I think CPS calls her "CPS Energy Savers Program Analyst") on assisting myself and my contractor through the various rules and paperwork. I also attended the KSTX sponsored educational seminar at Pearl Brewery to gain additional facts and guidance. There I met Yamin Aquilar from the City of San Antonio. My initial thoughts were that this would be a "no brainer". I hire a contractor who attended the CPS training, pay the contractor and receive the rebates. This is not the case! I interviewed 8 different contractors who attended the CPS training and only one was knowledgeable about CPS rebate program, CPS paperwork, Duct/AC/Insulation technical details and provided good value. This contractor was Rick Davis from Converse A/C & Heating. I will attach my Angie's List summary for details. You will see not all contractors met my requirements.

Anyone wishing to pursue the CPS and City of San Antonio rebate and low interest loan programs should realize there are no guarantees they will receive the full benefits when the work is completed. The home owner should place a requirement in the Contractor Scope of Work of their expectations. My expectations were that I would receive the rebates for which I applied. I became a bit concerned when my ductwork did not pass the CPS post audit check the first and second time. Because I had an exceptional contractor, Converse A/C stayed with the job until all leaks were resolved to the satisfaction of CPS. Converse A/C was also proactive in contacting CPS to fully define the requirements. And most importantly and sometimes overlooked was the administrative staff at Converse A/C. They were very timely and competent on completing all paperwork.

I am also appreciative to Yamin Aquilar from the City of San Antonio. I was a bit confused at the beginning on who to coordinate rebates, paperwork, financing, etc. However, Yamin (from the City) and Joni (from CPS) have an excellent working relationship. They both pointed me in the correct direction as needed. It was great to see CPS and the City of San Antonio working closely together for my benefit. I brag about San Antonio to friends in other cities about my positive experience.

I appreciate CPS Energy and the City of San Antonio progressive approach in assisting consumers identifies energy inefficiencies and then financially supporting the consumer to resolve those inefficiencies. Angie's List Critique on Converse A/C & Heating

I interviewed 8 contractors. Only Converse had the total package of knowledge, professionalism, CPS rebate insight, and attention to detail on paperwork.

Let me start at the beginning. I had the $95 CPS Home Energy Survey performed by Eco-Synergy Advisors in September 2011. I had a 19 year old 5 ton A/C unit and heater. I highly recommend everyone to spend the money to get the complete CPS survey. The survey found items I had never considered and ranked them in importance. The most significant was 65% duct leakage. I was a bit surprised but glad to find out this qualified me for some CPS rebates. I then wanted to consider maximizing all CPS rebates such as attic insulation and A/C replacement.

I called the big name contractors from Angie's list and from friends' recommendations. I am an engineer and like to know technical details so I was ready with many questions to see if they were knowledgeable about the rebates, the energy audit reports, savings potentials, insulation types, air flow, etc.

I wanted bids on fixing the duct leakage, replacement A/C and heat unit and attic insulation.

All contractors contacted had attended the CPS training and were on the eligible CPS contractor list. I am guessing some of the individuals visiting my house were not in the class.

  • 1 contractor gave me a bid over the phone.
  • 1 contractor left in five minutes when I told him I was collecting bids. I guess he didn't want any competition.
  • 2 contractors sent very good salesmen who did some cursory inspections but could not answer my technical questions and did not understand the CPS rebate program. They made me feel good about myself and their company. They gave me a partial price but would not give me a final price until they started the job.
  • 2 sent their technical representatives. One did not understand the energy audit or the CPS rebates but would get back to me. He did say their office girl would do all the paperwork but she was very, very busy. This made me nervous since the CPS paperwork did take some time to understand. The other technical representative did not have the knowledge of the others.
  • 1 contractor was very knowledgeable and understood the paperwork but would not provide a 10 year warranty on labor. He would provide 10 warranty on parts.

The contractor I chose was Converse A/C & Heating. Rick was knowledgeable on all technical details...he inspected my attic, ducting, registers, units, etc for about an hour. He provided his bid the next day. He was knowledgeable about CPS and knew various CPS folks. His A/C and Heating knowledge was exceptional. Rick obviously loves to fix problems and understand A/C and Heating complexities and then make them work in homes. He also told me how good his staff was at quickly completing rebate paperwork so I can receive the rebates as quickly as possible. They also offered 10 year parts and labor on the installation.

Converse A/C and Heating delivered on all counts. Installation was performed by Rick and his two technicians. They are very professional, courteous and also knowledgeable. CPS then required a post check to verify the duct leakage was at or below the requirement. The duct pressure test failed. Like I said, Rick loves to fix problems and finding the small leak was a challenge. Rick hired an independent contractor to perform the inspection at his expense and he talked with CPS in understanding the requirements. He found the small leak and I took full advantage of the CPS rebates.

Converse A/C and Heating are not inexpensive but they are competitive. Getting the CPS rebates is not a sure thing. You must have a knowledgeable contractor willing to work with CPS and understand the rebate requirements. Otherwise, you may not be able to take full advantage of the generous CPS rebates.

I have already recommended Converse A/C and Heating to my friends. They have had the same experience as I.

Assisted and oversaw CPS Energy Savers and 3rd Party Energy Auditors evaluations for replacement of both HVAC systems and ductwork and all insulation in 35 yr old home, one 3 ton and one 5 ton unit. Systems were both functioning but extremely inefficient with severely damaged ductwork throughout (loss of approx 65% air into attic spaces) and virtually non-existent to severely degraded attic wall and surface insulation. Our typical CPS summertime bills exceeded $700/month. We had contemplated replacements for years but the cost for everything we needed done due to the size of the home was cost prohibitive to this point. 12 months ago I started researching local Energy rebates and Federal programs and potential licensed Contractors and we had, at our sole cost, a full energy audit done by a very knowledgeable, professional company called LGO. After months of researching rebates and contractors, from CPS approved list of contractors of approx. 30 or so, we selected Mr. Rick Davis, Converse Heating and AC to do the work. The decision was based on his breadth and depth of knowledge, professionalism, attention to detail, familiarity of both he and his office staff of the rebate criteria and paperwork, as well as his sincerity in explaining different systems and price options with respect to rebates and paybacks, yet, never tried to oversell to us. We had interviewed and bid this job very hard amongst a short list of several very impressive contractors, but Mr. Davis really excelled in every one of our criteria. Coincidentally, prior to our final decision, one of our original units had gone out about 8pm one hot night and we called them to fix it. Their technician came out that evening (calling to say 'enroute'), and was very personable, extremely tidy, and highly capable. He repaired it and it was very affordable. (Note that both existing systems were so old and all we wanted to do was try to keep them limping along until we did the major contract and he told us the system was on the last leg then, very honestly). I and My husband both are retired military officers and value efficiency, effectiveness, and integrity. Every person we saw and dealt with in this company was a gold-star employee in this regard. We are also very detailed researchers and questioning consumers, and Mr. Davis did not speak down to us or blow us off, no matter what my list of questions for him entailed off the internet. He did not make decisions for us but gave us the information on price and performance and what met the reimbursements, financing, and local rebates so we could make the best decisions possible for ourselves. To us, this was a huge amount of money.

This was the most flawless, organized execution of a very complex and extensive contract we have seen since our days as military commanders. Once we awarded the contract to Mr. Davis's company, we were kept informed of schedules; crews showed up on time and worked very, very long, hot, hard shifts; they wore booties and covered all areas with clean drop clothes; they were polite and always upbeat-- not one of the ever complained, once--and all knowledgeable and professional. The installation ran nearly 2 weeks. Every crew member worked their butts off and Mr. Davis was right there, every day, all day long. Because of the CPS, City, and Federal rebates and financing programs we were applying for, the technical criteria was very stringent and if Mr. Davis had not been our contractor to work through issues with CPS and the rebate paperwork required, I don't think we would have gotten all of the rebates or funding that we did. He was so knowledgeable and thorough that he was prepared for potential pitfalls for the Federal and City energy programs before they even happened. The City Inspectors and CPS Energy Saver Auditing company, EcoSynergy, all said this was the best installation they had ever seen and wished all contractors would have the quality of this job on their jobs. Here's the bottom line for us: Because of Mr. Davis, we have hi-tech state of the art systems and insulation packages, and our recent CPS bill was about $300 for a hot June instead of $700 last year in June. In fact, the new systems are so extraordinary and humidity controlled, we were freezing the first week and had to keep setting the thermostats higher. What we used to set was 74 degrees to be just at livable (a hand held thermometer would read 78 degrees inside) with all the air loss and inefficiency; what we set it at now is 80 degrees because the air feels so much cooler and we are not losing it all out of the attics (same hand held thermometer shows 80 degrees inside) so this is a true temperature yet we don't feel like it is Arizona and all dried out in here. I say it's like a spring day every day now inside our house. And, because we exceeded all energy saving programs, we are getting back about 30% of or total costs from the City, CPS and Federal funding. We are exceedingly grateful to the entire company for their hard work and help. - Antoinette

To the Converse A/C Team,

Well, it's been about 6 weeks since I had Converse A/C out to completely replace my 2 air condition systems and upstairs duct work. The performance of the system has exceeded my expectations. Call me crazy but... This is one bill (both my cooling costs and the financing of the systems) that I'm happy to pay every month. All things considered, it's worth every penny!

The Converse A/C Team was first class in terms of the quality of work, the systems they installed and the seamless ease of the whole process. I want to specifically recognize Rick for his engineering expertise and recommending exactly what I needed. There was no over-sell on anything. He was fair, took the time to explain everything to me, and gave me exactly what I needed, nothing more, nothing less. As added comfort. Rick also was part of the installation team, from start to finish. That's a true engineer that has pride in his workmanship.

I also can't say enough about the Converse A/C crew that did the attic work. If there is any place corners can be cut, it's in the attic. This is hard work, period, Joe (hope I got his name right) and the rest of the attic team did a first class engineering job. I've been in my attic (actually more than once) to look over, in detail, exactly what they did. I must say, looking at the finished product, makes me wonder how folks can do such tedious work, in such small spaces, with complete attention to detail, precision and quality. It was as though the whole team was doing the quality of work that they would do on their own house.

Last but not least I want to recognize the Converse A/C office team. They made the whole process in terms of rebates, communication, and financing almost non-existent for me. If I'm ever to do this again, just call Converse A/C, throw them the house keys and take a short vacation, because I'll rest easy knowing everything will be first-class, worry free and done when I return.

Can't say this for lots of other service providers. For whomever says pride, quality of workmanship, and trust is declining in this country, say, not at Converse A/C. These folks are the real thing. Sincerely, - Robert

All contractors contacted had attended the CPS training and were on the eligible CPS contractor list. I am guessing some of the individuals visiting my house were not in the class.

  • 1 contractor gave me a bid over the phone.
  • 1 contractor left in five minutes when I told him I was collecting bids. I guess he didn't want any competition.
  • 2 contractors sent very good salesmen who did some cursory inspections but could not answer my technical questions and did not understand the CPS rebate program. They made me feel good about myself and their company. They gave me a partial price but would not give me a final price until they started the job.
  • 2 sent their technical representatives. One did not understand the energy audit or the CPS rebates but would get back to me. He did say their office girl would do all the paperwork but she was very, very busy. This made me nervous since the CPS paperwork did take some time to understand. The other technical representative did not have the knowledge of the others.
  • 1 contractor was very knowledgeable and understood the paperwork but would not provide a 10 year warranty on labor. He would provide 10 warranty on parts.

The contractor I chose was Converse A/C & Heating. Rick was knowledgeable on all technical details... He inspected my attic, ducting, registers, units, etc for about an hour. He provided his bid the next day. He was knowledgeable about CPS and knew various CPS folks. His A/C and Heating knowledge was exceptional. Rick obviously loves to fix problems and understand A/C and Heating complexities and then make them work in homes. He also told me how good his staff was at quickly completing rebate paperwork so I can receive the rebates as quickly as possible. They also offered 10 year parts and labor on the installation.

Converse A/C and Heating delivered on all counts. Installation was performed by Rick and his two technicians. Very professional, courteous and also knowledgeable. CPS then required a post check to verify the duct leakage was at or below the requirement. The duct pressure test failed. Like I said, Rick loves to fix problems and finding the small leak was a challenge. Rick hired an independent contractor to perform the inspection at his expense and he talked with CPS in understanding the requirements. He found the small leak and I took full advantage of the CPS rebates.

Converse A/C and Heating are not inexpensive but they are competitive. Getting the CPS rebates is not a sure thing. You must have a knowledgeable contractor willing to work with CPS and understand the rebate requirements. Otherwise, you may not be able to take full advantage of the generous CPS rebates.

I have already recommended Converse A/C and Heating to my friends. They have had the same experience as I.

Converse A/C had a repairman at my house within two hours of my call, and the unit was up and running within another hour.
